“Always the bridesmaid, never the bride…that stupid, irritating little phrase as been the story of my life for as long as I can remember.”
Jamie Austin shook her head as she spoke those words, knowing they were all too true when it came to her. The young woman was in the backstage area of the arena, in the catering section to be more precise. She had a bottle of water and a small plate with some healthier snack options on it sometime before her semi-main event match against Devin Copeland, something she had already changed into her ring gear for as well. A name that she knew well from before…someone that she had watched many times over the years that they had worked together before she entered the ring herself.
“I bet you think you have my number, don’t you? You’ve got it all figured out nicely in that head of yours, Devin…at least you think you do.I wouldn’t be surprised if that was how you felt…it’s how most of my opponents feel when they find out they’re getting in the ring with me.”
Austin shrugged arrogantly as she popped a grape into her mouth as she thought about her career over the last couple of years. There had been times, and matches, that had gone her way and other instances that hadn’t…but wasn’t that the way of the wrestling industry as a whole? The brunette finished the grape, swallowing it before she spoke again.
“I’d be more surprised if you weren’t thinking that way, honestly. You’d most likely be one of the first ones not thinking of me in that aspect, but it is what it is in the long run of it all. Such is the way of life in this business, after all. But I didn’t become one of the number 1 contenders to the World Championship just because of my gorgeous looks, after all. Although if there was a looks competition portion to it all, I already know that I’d win with ease.”
Jamie smirked a little as she proceeded to pop a little cheese cube into her mouth next, crossing one leg over the other. She was silent for a few moments as she chewed and swallowed the cheese cube before she took a sip from the water bottle that she had on the table as well. Catering wasn’t super busy, not that it mattered to her either way truthfully, but it did make things a little easier in terms of not having to deal with more people than she absolutely had to.
“Something you probably fail to realize or even think about, Copeland, is that I’ve had the advantage of watching you in the ring off and on for years when you and my…sister worked here together, however many times and however long that was. Really, I have that advantage over a number of people that are back with WWH. Y’all can’t say that when it comes to me though, can you? None of you can say that you have years and years of observation under your belts when it comes to what I’m capable of doing in the ring…you only have what you’ve seen from me in WWH or over the last year or two if you’ve paid attention to the one other company that I’ve wrestled in. People still see me as the silly little rookie that can’t handle things properly because I’ve started wrestling so late in the game compared to everyone else.”
The generational wrestler let out a light chuckle when she finished speaking. She knew that there were very few that followed others’ careers when it came to other companies. Truthfully, she was one of those that didn’t follow everyone else’s careers…only those that she felt needed to be followed. And of course, that number wasn’t exactly in the double digits or anything of the sort. Then again, that was only something she did when she had been requested to do, not because it was something that she wanted to do in the long run of it all.
“And let’s be honest with ourselves…how many of you morons actually kept track of others after the last time WWH closed its doors? How many of you actually gave a damn enough to see what the rest of us were up to? The only damn reason I ever kept track of anyone, and trust me, it wasn’t very many people at all, was because she asked me to. It wasn’t something I did because I wanted to. I didn’t give a crap about keeping track of a single damn person that was here when things went south last time. But I was a good and diligent sister, and manager, and did what was asked of me until I got sick of it. I guess being her little errand bitch worked out for me in the long run, though.”
The Texas native looked down at her nails, the smirk still on her face as she did so. She inspected them for a few silent moments before letting out a sigh then licking her glossed lips. Jamie rolled her eyes a little when she thought about how much she had brought up Jonna considering that hadn’t been part of her intentions by any means.
“That was then, however, and this is now. Now is my time to be the star of the family, to show that I’m not just a pretty face in the background. I know that’s how everyone saw me, if they even paid any attention when I walked around here as a manager. That stage of my life is over; it’s time for everyone to take me seriously no matter what I have to do in order to achieve that goal. If I were you, Devin? Well…”
The brunette woman smirked again as she paused one last time, licking her painted lips for a final time as she looked at the camera that was across from her. She said nothing for a few moments, letting her words and the pause sink in a bit before deciding to continue.
“I wouldn’t underestimate me if I were you. Whether I win or lose, I always make a statement. And tonight, you’re my statement to make while I work on my Legacy. No matter how that statement ends up coming, I can assure you that one way or another, you’ll be just another name in my history book. People come and go, but Legacies are remembered forever…just keep that in mind, dear. I’ll see you in the ring soon enough.”
Jamie grabbed her water and plate, the smirk still ever present on her face as she stood to throw her stuff away. She walked back towards the camera, leaving a lip gloss kiss on the lens before walking out of catering and towards the locker room areas.
