*Edwards is seen sitting on the sidewalk in LA. He was still a mess with the bushy beard, and it looks like he hasn’t showered in weeks. When he saw Eden die on that table, it changed him. It was almost like everything that he had is now gone. Jonathan is wearing an old white t-shirt, black shorts, ankle socks, and black sneakers on his feet. He had a bottle of whiskey in his hand and was chugging it like no other. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold locket. Inside that locket are him and Eden. One side shows them smiling and all happy, while on the other, it shows them kissing.*
"Fuck, my life has gotten down the dumps without you here, Eden. Why the fuck did I hide my love for you from the world?"
*It was almost like everything was now gone. He stood up from the sidewalk and threw the whiskey to the side, at which it hit the wall and shattered. He takes a moment to take it all in.
"I’m coming to see you, Eden."
He walks towards a bridge and goes towards the edge as he looks up at the sky. But he was immediately pulled back as he shook his head and looked up and he saw her.
"This isn’t happening. It’s impossible. I saw you dead on the table and saw the flatline."
Edwards moves back a bit, and you still see him have a big bushy beard and is in a state of shock.
Eden looks back at him through a face more hard and angular than the last time he saw it, gaunt maybe, like some inner reserve had been burnt away in her heinous ordeal of transformation. Her gaze is transfixed on him in a stare so still it's almost reptilian...
But something in there, if he looks very deep inside... is still familiar. The part of her that loves him. "It's real. I don't know how... but I'm back. And I'm here for you. But I need you to be back too."
That last sentence would sound desperate if it didn't also sound so tired. She reaches out for him, fingertips reaching out to take his almost timidly. Edwards wasn’t sure what to think as he slowly stood up and gulped. It was almost like something that seems like it can’t be real.*
"But...how? How are you back? When you died, everything was taken from me. Everything that I loved and cared for was like gone in the snap of a finger." As he slowly tilts his head to the side.
*Truth is that he’s glad she’s back, but it doesn’t make a lick of sense to him. How can she be here and what happened to her? He moves towards her and walks around here to try to make sure that she’s the same person as he last saw her. He stops as grabs the locket that he found in her office.*
"I found this locket in your office the night that you died. It was the only thing that I had to remind me of you, Eden. But I’m happy that you’re back. Cause I missed you so much."
The words that she was his everything reached through the chill on her soul to that deeper part, and she wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest. It was a relief that he could still reach that in her. Maybe there was a delay in getting to it that hadn't been there before, but it was still working.
After a moment of relief, she found words to explain a little easier. "I don't really know all of what happened. I think Sly tried something to fix the flatline after I was gone, but somebody switched his vials of medication, and..."
Would the truth of what she'd turned into scare him? Because he didn't know about it yet, despite others in the company seeing her like that. He apparently hadn't been one. If he didn't know about it and there were side effects from her transforming, he could end up too stunned to defend himself. She didn't want to risk hurting him just to hold him to her for longer, and she wouldn't know if she didn't ask. "... It was something outside of normal medical science. I turned into something... more than human. I was still inside there, but it was like my animal instincts and emotions were in the driver's seat, not my rational human side. Which... honestly is extremely scary to me. You know I always try to think a step ahead before I do things. For example, I had to see that we were worth the risk my rational side said would come with us public, too. Maybe being out of control intellectually for a while showed me the importance of emotions too, but them being in the driver's seat alone like that was terrifying."
She sighed and let go of him so she could look up in his eyes and see how he was handling this. "I hope there aren't side effects that could cause people to get hurt, but I don't know for sure. Especially don't want you hurt. I turned back... some days ago, it feels like just a couple but it's blurry. I had to recover and make sure I was safe to be around before I came and found you. If I hurt you before I was sure of that, I'd never forgive myself."
Edwards mind begins to take in everything about what she said. How can he really take in everything? How can he be brave knowing that he lost everything? When he saw her on that table, it was like something out of a horror movie.
"Everything that has happened, happened because of that night. When I saw you on that table dead, it felt like my entire world was taken from me and that scared me...alot. I tried to move on, but couldn’t. I couldn’t move on because in some parts of me, I hoped and prayed that you was still alive."
He steps closer to her and tries to take in what he’s seeing right now. There's no doubt that he loves Eden. His heart will always belong to her and there’s no changing that.
"Truth be told, when I tried to move on, I knew I couldn’t. Because no other girl knows me like you do."
"You must have been through hell too." Eden's hands fall to Edwards' and hook fingertips.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She blinks up at him for a moment, thinking how it might help them both. "I don't know a lot of what went on since then, about anything, and I feel so lost." Her fingers twist in his awkwardly. "Can we go somewhere else? Get you inside away from this edge, somewhere I can mentally settle too."
He looks down at her as their fingers intertwine each other. The way that Edwards looks at her is that of happiness once again. Seeing her once again has brought back that smile that he thought he lost. "Honestly, all I want to do is get back to the things that were taken from me that night. I couldn’t imagine my life without you, Eden. I had something for you when we was on the island getaway, to this day, I still have a special gift for you but I don’t want to give it until the moment is right."
He knows that the gift he had for her was an engagement ring, but that was destroyed when he saw her on that table dead. But now that she’s back, he won't do anything until the time is right. His love for Eden will always be unmatched.
"Yeah, we can. I want to hear everything about you and what happened that night. I mean, at least that something, right?" As he moves closer to her body and feels the warmth build up between their bodies. "I want to pick up right where we left off."
She remembers the beach, it feels like a whole other world from here practically. "We should go back to your place," she says, her head against his chest for just another lingering moment. She hears his heart beating, breathing in the warm smell of him that at one point she thought she might not ever get to experience again.
Then, once she feels steady, she uses that connection of their fingertips to draw him home. "Pick up... near where we left off, at least. Whatever you got me, I'm sure its time will come."
"When it comes, I’m going to make sure that you love it." He smiles. "But until then, let's get back to my place and we can have that night that was destroyed for us."
Edwards knows what it is because it was on the island where they would end up having sex on the beach. Well, more like a private part of the island for the two. But that’s for another story. He grabs her hand as they walk away from the bridge. They move down the street as Edwards turns around and looks at the bridge that could’ve taken his life away.
This is a moment he doesn’t want to remember. He wants to remember this night with the one that he loves the most. He turns around, looking at Eden and giving off a smile.
"This moment? This moment could’ve ended badly, but in a way, it ended good when I finally got the chance to see you again."
She smiles back at him. "This feels like the moment that I finally got back home."
They make their way back down the sidewalks, indoors. Edwards’' place is a bit disheveled in his grief, and Eden is momentarily a flurry of motion, leaving his side if only to make themselves more comfortable for a few seconds. Then she's huddling down on the couch with him, finding her spot in his arms, lacing her own around his back.
"Where do we start? Because I don't remember how I got hurt in the first place. I just remember being at my desk, then there's this terrifying blur." While it's easier to probe that dark place with him here, that's still an incremental change on a yawning abyss of memory she's trying to tiptoe towards.
"I remember perfectly that night, well, the night before everything went down the shitter...no pun intended. I remember the beach and I remember we had to cut it short because something was happening at the Sanatorium. It was that night where I was in my cell when the riots started."
He holds her close to his body as he slides his finger up and down her arm gently. He looks forward and sees how bushy his beard has gotten and rubs it slowly.
"But before I do anything, I need to do something." As he continue to rub his beard.
"You stay here and get comfortable."
He moves slightly to the side as he deems the light down a bit. He looks at her in the eyes and gives off a smile. He walks into the hallway and heads up the steps to get to his bathroom.
"I’m never going to have this beard anymore."
He grabs his electric razor and this is the type of razor you don’t need shaving cream. He begins to shave his beard and sees his face again with the 5 o'clock shadow. That’s when he heard his door being knocked on.
"It’s open."
"I don't mind watching you get a little less beastly. Kinda tame compared to what I've been through recently." She smiles fondly at him. "Just didn't like being in the quiet so long."
She shifts to the corner so he has space to work, but they can see each other in the mirror over his shoulder, right within reach. Even as she thinks it she's giving into it, laying a hand between his shoulders for comfort. "I remember the riots. It was way down in the bowels of Block A. I was glad it wasn't near you. Quinn was trying to control it, and there was a crash, and then--"
She buries her face against his back. It's too ugly to take apart. Just a whirl of pain out of nowhere while she was distracted on the phone, trying to call in backup.
Edward takes a minute to think about that night. That night will run through his mind like a bat out of hell. He wanted to forget it but couldn't. He can't because he knows it has been imprinted in his mind. He slowly turns around and looks at her in the eyes.
"Listen, everything about that night, I want to try to forget. When I saw you on that table and...well..." He closed his eyes to try to forget about it. "I don't want to talk about that night. Sorry, I just can't. I felt so weak and helpless seeing you there and I couldn't do anything. But...I don't have to worry about that anymore because you're here and not in my imagination where I thought you were a ghost."
He put his hand on his face and felt the stubble on his cheeks and chin.
"Perfect. No more looking like a freaking Lumberjack."
"There's that face I love. Still a little rough around the edges, just like I like it," she teased, tiptoeing up to kiss his cheek. "Enough trying to remember for today, maybe. Don't wanna push too hard."
She hoped she could let go of it as easily as it sounded, at least. Her end had been traumatic, and it sounded like he had some baggage in whatever he'd been doing while she was busy being a science project on the loose. How did one fill the space left with something that big being avoided, though? "We could go back out to the island sometime this week if you want, but tonight I think we should stay in, what do you say?"
Edwards gave off a slight smile as he put his hands on her waist while looking into her eyes. Edwards has always shown that he couldn’t live with Eden in his life but he knows that he has to do whatever it takes to get back to the world that he knows.
"You know, that sounds like it could be fun and I would want to do something like that once again..." As he lowers his head and smiles before looking up again. "...but once everything gets back to normal...or normalise, then we can. I was thinking after I beat Johnson, then we will. That way we can get back to the passion that we left off."
Edwards' mind has been so funky lately and it seems like everything is going back into place when he saw Eden pulling him from the ledge of that bridge no more than thirty minutes or so ago.
"Thank you, Eden. Thank you for coming back and saving me from jumping off that ledge. You have no idea how much I love you even more." He smiles as he puts his hand through her hair. "I will never look back at anything in my life that doesn’t involve you."
That urge again in her to just melt against his chest, the one she gave into on the bridge? She gives into it again. Wraps her arms around him, buries her face in his chest at first... then raises her head to look him in the eyes before she kisses him deeply.
With a break for air, she grins a little. "Well, you know, I kind of joked in my head that I was falling into this Harley Quinn cliche with you. The psychiatrist falling for the criminal patient. I hated it at first, I seriously hated it. Because I didn't see you as the dangerous-to-society kind of crazy that the Joker was, and I don't have a history of being the type of girl to let a man use me as he did her. But..." She can't help the giggle that escapes, "In some ways it kinda fits?"
He was honestly curious about what she meant by that. Was Edwards her joker? Was he the crazy man that made her fall in love with him? What does it all mean for someone like Edwards? He shrugs it off a bit as he holds her close and gives off a smile.
"In a way, it does. I mean, I’m in the Sanatorium so I must be crazy, right? But you know something, Eden? I am crazy..." As he put his hand through her hair gently while looking deep into her eyes. "Crazy in love with you. I don't normally fall in love with a woman quickly, but the moment I saw you, I knew where I wanted to give my heart to."
He grabbed her hand gently as he gave her that sweet smile on his face. He leans down and kisses the back of her hand before leaning in to kiss her lips. It was the seven seconds of passion from this kiss. He finally break it to look into her eyes.
"And that's not crazy talk."
She couldn't stop smiling up at him, even if she wanted to be serious right now. Being near him was just too good. She hadn't felt love like this before. And as much as she knew the clinical ideas of love forming? Feeling them for real was the experience of a lifetime.
Her eyes met his at that moment, and all she had to say was, "I love you."
"Fuck, my life has gotten down the dumps without you here, Eden. Why the fuck did I hide my love for you from the world?"
