“Sins of Success”
Thursday, February 25th, 2021. War Room Dojo, Late Morning. Brooklyn, NY.
(Stephanie “Cloud” Matsuda is standing on the ring apron as her attentive students stand before her at ringside. The normally relaxed Queen of Fighters had an aura of authority as she presented the class with their first lesson of the spring semester. The lighting inside the modern-style gym is low save for lights above the ring area. Not far from the first ring is a new one installed a few yards away from the original. This was Cloud’s gym where she held both wrestling and MMA classes for the Bushwick and surrounding areas of Brooklyn. But today, the twelve students who stood below her were a unique assortment of young faces. These were clients from the Cloud Nine Center who wanted to become pro wrestlers. This was the start of Matsuda’s special project - one that she has yet made a name for.) Stephanie Matsuda: Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives. Normally I leave it to my head instructor Nina to lead the beginner class, but you were all chosen by me personally. In fact, this class is different from any other in the history of the dojo. The one thing each of you have in common is that you are all clients of the Cloud Nine Center - or rather were clients, because as of today you will be living upstairs. There are several apartments including my own, and there will be four of you to an apartment. As you look around, there’s only twelve, which is half the size of a normal class. This will be a rigorous experience - much like a trade school. You will be under my supervision for two years - from the end of February 2021 to February 2023. You will live here, train here, and work here as a form of payment. You are here because you told me and my staff that this is the life you wanted. There are many obstacles for those who wish to get into the business both financial and personal. This program is designed to eliminate those obstacles, but nothing is for free. You will be sheltered and fed, but if you have issues with no being paid then I either suggest you walk out that door or find a hustle that won’t interfere with your training.(Stephanie’s eyes lingered on the youthful faces of her twelve “chosen” who were mostly in their late teens and early 20s.) Stephanie Matsuda: You will be attending class four times a week, and are expected to exercise every day. You will be given a daily regimen and diet and physical exercise. These classes will be taught between myself, and the Wild Boys, Billy and Jimmy respectively. Mr. Kevin Maverick will be joining us soon, but will be observing to keep informed about your progress. Speaking which, you will all be judged as a unit. If one of you fails, you all will be replaced by another group of hungry youth who would kill to be here. If you succeed then you have my blessing and approval, which goes a long way in this business. You will never have to worry about scraping out of the bottom of the barrel because I will make it my personal mission that you will be employed, starting from your second year in the program which you all will be the first to compete in what I like to call WRW: War Room Wrestling. More on that will be explained as we progress. You guys wanted a way out of homeless? Well, here you have it. I guarantee that you will be given the best training possible on the face of the planet. That’s why today’s class is labeled “Session 0” because it’s more of a lecture combined with a fitness test at the end to see where each of you are at. For now, we’ll take a break so you can let everything I’ve said sink in and we can begin your fitness tests. Come back in ten minutes, and please hydrate ahead of time. (With a wave of her hand, Matsuda dispersed her class. As she jumped down from the apron, she turned to Dystopia Interviewer Faith Wilde with an accompanying camera crew. They were traveling with the War Queen for a few weeks to get a documentation of her life inside and outside the ring. Stephanie grabbed a bottle of water to take a sip as Faith approached her.) Faith Wilde: Mrs. Matsuda, if I can have a word.Stephanie Matsuda: (sighs) Sure, knock yourself out.Faith Wilde: Several weeks ago you and the new champion Renee Jonae were attacked out of nowhere by your own protégé, Serenity Scorpio! After being missing for a while, she decided to make herself known at the end of the night. Do you know why she did what she did? And do you think she had something to do with the attack on Jocelyn?(Stephanie sighs and shakes her head.) Stephanie Matsuda: I don’t know what to think, Faith. Everyone keeps asking me the same questions over and over, but I have no answers. I have my suspicions, but if I let those thoughts fester, then I won’t be ready for what happens next. But, I’ll say this much: Serenity is hurting. As angry as she might be or confused at the moment, she’s probably disappointed in the way her career has gone and somehow she blames me for this. Maybe I should take responsibility, but if she wants to act out like some kind of insecure child, then I might have to treat her as such. But for now, I’m just happy Jocelyn is okay. She’s still recovering, so it’ll be some time before we see her back in action.Faith Wilde: Speaking which, your loss to Renee. That was one of the best matches we’ve seen in WWH, but I’m sure being distracted by Serenity is eating away at you. Some say you had the match won before you noticed her in the crowd.Stephanie Matsuda: Regardless if I was distracted by Renee or not, at the end of the day, she beat me. Kudos to Ms. Jonae, because nowadays a good rival is hard to find. Am I upset that she ended my reign a month before holding it for a year? Yes, I freaking am. But, she earned that victory. I can never take that away from her. But alas, I have a more immediate concern.Faith Wilde: Sah'ta Thor. What are your thoughts going into this title defense?
Stephanie Matsuda: The so-called “True International Champion” has been hot on my heels for months, trying to get a title shot. His pride is properly the biggest sin he has to worry about, because there’s a reason why I’m the most dominant champion in recent memory. During his victory celebration after defeating Levi Tsingine, Jacob Steele hinted that Thor owns the yard. Well, forgive me if a part of me rolls my eyes at that statement. No disrespect to Thor, as he’s been pretty dominant, but I’ve been a double champion for nearly half of 2020. And that’s just the titles I’ve held in WWH. He’s gathered Imperium as a metaphorical fist to crash against the landscape, but know and understand this - I’m not shook. I’ve already said this about the Ashes of the Wake, but there’s been a multitude of factions who vied for control of a company. I get it - there’s powers in numbers right? But here’s why they failed: more people means more personalities. And if those minds clash, then well you have a problem on our hands. Time and energy is spent on making sure everyone falls in line and for all you know, there’s at least one person in your squad planning to betray you. It’s why I fly solo most of the time. Hell, look at the Japanese Sengoku period. Oda Nobunaga was one of the leading figures, regarded as the first "unifier” of Japan. He sat at the head of the table until his own retainer Akechi Mitsuhide ambushed him in Kyoto and forced him to commit seppuku. His own ally, Faith! Nobunaga was succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi who basically went mad and sent a third of the country’s military to war in Korea and China because he was afraid his own men would grow restless and attack him because for over a hundred years Japan knew nothing but war! In some ways, wrestling is war incarnate. We compete with each other over titles, ideals, money, and glory. We’re so rooted in violence that we’re willing to risk our lives week in and out without blinking a goddamn eye. In some ways, I can relate to the “Great Unifiers” of Sengoku Japan. For a whole year I kept a foot on the neck of the WWH Women’s Division. I motivated them to fight harder and pulled the best out of Renee Jonae and Belladonna Hunter. I showed the world why Jonny Cedrone was worthy of reintroducing the International Championship while maintaining control of the title. And now? Like everyone before him, Sah'ta will be humbled before The Queen of Fighters.Faith Wilde: Those are some bold words. Do you think Serenity will interfere in your match?(Stephanie crosses her arms and shrugs.) Stephanie Matsuda: If she’s with Imperium, then yeah, I can see it. But I doubt she is, but I wouldn’t put it past her to push the ladder as I’m about to reach for the title. Something tells me that I’m going to need eyes in the back of my head. I didn’t get a chance to go from post to post with the women’s title, but I’d like to set a precedent with the International Championship. I could sit back, curl myself up into a ball and stress myself out to no end, but I have to keep moving forward, Faith. This guy Thor...he made Levi tap. He lost to Kaine for the Shogun quarterfinal, but anything is possible in a triple threat, ya know? I mean Kaine won with a freaking roll-up! Sometimes defeat comes out of nowhere. But, there will be no pins in this match, Faith. We’re literally going to be climbing the ladder of success. Only one of us can seize destiny by the fingertips and I have every intention to make sure that it’s me. Faith Wilde: Wouldn’t this be the downside to being on your own? You’ll have no backup going into this match.
Stephanie Matsuda: True, but it’ll enable me to stay sharp and be aware of my surroundings at all times. I...just have to keep up the fight, you know? Heh, it’s kind of funny when you think about it. Both Thor and I are fighting against time.Faith Wilde: What do you mean?Stephanie Matsuda: Well didn’t he mention that he has a terminal illness back in October? And that by fall 2021 he might kick the bucket? I mean...it sucks. He’s been a great contributor to the community and if this news is true, I’ll honor him when he’s gone, but competition is competition, sweets. Just like he has a legacy to cement, so do I. Nobody is exempt from taking an L, and I’m sure Thoir wouldn’t have it any other way but to earn MY International Championship through hard work and perseverance! I down to make some memories and add another fantastic match to my storied career. I hope Thor is too because that’s all he’s getting out of this. That’s the only thing I can promise without disappointing him, Faith. We’re going to kill it this Sunday night, but I’m going to do everything in my power to ensure that I remain the International Champion. I’ve already one title, sweets. I can’t afford to lose this, no matter what the circumstance is - be it family, personal, or otherwise.
Faith Wilde: So you’re not influenced by an opponent’s situation?
Stephanie Matsuda: Unless if it’ll java a direct influence on that match, the only thing I care about is making sure that every adversary comes up and gets these hands, Faith. The hardcore element is my specialty so it’s not about whether or not I’ll be in Thor’s yard, but whether or not he’ll be in mine. Especially since I’ll be sending a message…Faith Wilde: And that is…?(Stephanie turns to the camera as if she was addressing the entire world and pointed at the camera.) Stephanie Matsuda: I will show no mercy to whoever enters the domain of the Queen of Fighters. I don’t care if I regard you as family - I will treat all potential threats as just another victim. My dreams of being a year-long women’s champion were tainted by someone’s buffoonery and if this person decides to show her face any moment after that bell rings, then I will give her a reason to hate me and it’s not going to be one she’ll never forgive me for. People want to be on their worst behavior!? I can do that! I can act like a spoiled brat and attack someone I treated as my own goddamn family too! I can bite the hand of someone who used to hug me and follow it up by spitting on their name! If...if it was you who attacked Jocelyn Serenity, then I swear to God your traitorous deed won’t go unpunished. So I suggest that you tread carefully backstage, sweets, and if you did find a new group of friends? Keep. Them. Close. Because I’ll be coming for them...and then for you.(The cold eyes of the Queen of Fighters lingered on screen as she took a moment to gather her composure, despite keeping her eyes on the cameras.) Stephanie Matsuda: I normally don’t do this, but to honor you and your career just this once, I shall refer to you as Thor-sama. I respect that you were the last International Champion of the previous generation, but it’s my world now, sweets. I did exactly what I said I would do and have taken this belt across the globe as I continue my never-ending quest for gold. I’m the jetsetting, globetrotting Queen of Fighters I told people I would become and went on to have one of the best 2020s in wrestling - if not THE best 2020 out of anyone! Three world championships, a tag championship, and several continental and speciality titles in the span of MONTHS. Also a bucket load of year end awards to boot. I was given the prestigious Tokyo Sports Service Award for my role in reviving joshi puroresu with the rise of JET. And somehow I managed to open up a national chain of LGBT youth shelters across the country and will soon open one in Tokyo. I AM the people’s champion, Thor-sama. That’s what Mr. Jonny Cedrone dubbed this title- The People’s Championship. This is what separates the International Championship from the Affliction, Women’s World, and WWH World Championships. When you’re the International Champion...you are the face of the people. I’m sure there are people who can relate to your plight Thor-sama and you may feel like you don’t have enough time on your hands, but at the end of the day I was called upon to represent the people and I’ve done so in SPADES. The commercial snippet for our match reads as follows: “Two International titles both hung over the ring, the objective is to retrieve not just one title but both. And Can Thor rain Thunder and Lightning down on WWH and do what almost seems to be unthinkable at this point and beat Matsuda? Or will Matsuda continue her dominance for what has seemed like a long freaking time?” You see sweets, one cannot have lightning without clouds, sooo…(Stephanie spreads her arms out wide.) Stephanie Matsuda: A storm’s brewing, sweets. But only clouds can decide when lightning strikes. So your story won’t continue in my division, sweets. But maybe it will continue on somewhere else. May the gods have mercy on your soul, Thor-sama. Peace be with you. Know it. Understand it. Believe it.(Stephanie nods at the camera and walks off to continue teaching her class.)

Legacy
It was finally time to bring one of the biggest goals Sah'ta Thor had in returning to the World Wrestling Headquarters to fruition. Sure he had stumbled at the end of the Shogun Tournament but management had finally decided his interest in having an International Championship match was at hand. After his resounding victory over the Shogun Tournament runner up Levi Tsingine his shot at WWH International Champion Matsuda had been signed for the upcoming edition of Dystopia. Live from the Elysium Arena Sah'ta Thor would battle Matsuda in a Ladder match with the winner walking away with the WWH International Championship.
"The time has finally come for one of WWH's greatest travesties to come to an end. Since I first made my shocking return to this company one thing has been on my mind. I made it abundantly clear how I felt about the current WWH International Championship and how it was an affront to the legacy of the previous WWH International Championship. The one title I held in this company in my first run back in 2016. While I won't go back and repeat my thoughts on the history of the belt in question, I will raise an interesting question. Why is that so many of the people who held the old International Title have willingly let its history and legacy be forgotten?"
As this question echoes through the air the image of a wrestling ring slowly comes into view. While the image solidifies a kneeling man with his head bowed is seen spotlighted in a reddish glow. He slowly lifts his head to reveal that it is none other than Sah'ta Thor, the leader of the Imperium. Over his shoulder is the 2016 version of the WWH International Championship that he had held for over two months.
"I will get back to that question but first let me remind you all of a few facts. I won this belt on August 7, 2016 and WWH Anniversary 8 in an Empire of Blood TLC Match against then International Champion Reaper. It was a match that was called by Caleb Foster, the man who Reaper had won the belt from. Yet, I will get back to that little point. You see, I need to make one thing very clear to everyone involved in the fact that I never one said I had been undefeated for the International Championship. In fact, you can go back to the August 23rd, 2020 edition of Dystopia to hear me say that very thing. No, I lost the belt at Wargames on October 30, 2016 to Shad Moss. " Thor reaches over and runs his hand over the surface of the championship belt that was in fact the replica of the belt he won years earlier.
"This issue has never been about being an undefeated champion coming back to claim a stolen prize. No this has always been about the forgotten legacy. While I might not have been the greatest WWH International Champion of the old era I seem to be the only one willing to fight for the history and glory of those days. While the original WWH International Championship may have gone on to be merged with the HellFire Extreme Champion to become the Unified Hellfire Championship at Grindhouse 2017 the legacy remains. Which makes me wonder why men like Noah Hanson, Caleb Foster, and Brian Boru have allowed the travesty that is the current International Championship to exist."
There is a pause as Thor pulls the belt off his shoulder and holds it above his head with his left hand as he takes a breath.
"Each one of those men have had their hands on the original WWH International Championship or what it became. Yet, like I have already talked about several times the belt that is currently being called the WWH International Championship is just a renamed belt without much of its rightful prestige. It is nothing more than the Utopia Title that was brought in after the show rebranding that John Cedrone renamed. A renaming that management went along with for whatever reason. I will accept that it was during the changing of the guard from the Harts to what we have now. However, what I can't accept is that the men who held either the International Championship or the Unified Hellfire Championship allowed it to happen with saying a word.
With those words Thor rises to his feet while slinging his International Championship over his shoulder once more.
"I am sure each of them have their reasons for allowing history to be forgotten. What with Noah being the Dystopia Co-General Manager and Caleb being part of the Dystopia Commentary team. Brian only just came back to the WWH for Isle. So in the end I guess the fault for such a glaring hole in WWH history remains firmly on the shoulders of former WWH Owner Adrian Hart. However, when I came in and pointed all of this out before and during the Shogun Tournament I expected there to be more of a reaction. Yet, as we all know there wasn't a thing mentioned past my being told that my claim to the International Championship would be revisited once Shogun was over. During which time Matsuda took the belt for Cedrone and has held it since even though Cedrone attempted to reclaim it at Shogun."
Thor walks over to the ropes and hangs his title over the top rope before sliding under the bottom rope. Once on the outside of the ring he reaches under the ring and pulls out a ladder which he slides into the ring with an amused smirk on his lips. He slides back into the ring and sets the ladder up in the center of the red spotlight circle. As soon as the ladder is standing Thor walks back to the ropes and returns the championship to his shoulder.
"Which I guess management wanted this matter dealt with sooner rather than later as I have been a match against Matsuda. Not only will it be a match for the International Championship but it will be a ladder match. Above the ladder her belt and mine will be hanging and the only way to win will be to be the first to retrieve both belts. Let me be clear about something, no matter what happens in this match I win. If I win I become the new WWH International Champion merging the old history to the new belt. If I lose the legacy of the old belt will still be merged into the current history. Either way I get what I set out to do when I came back to WWH. Regardless of if I beat Matsuda or not I will have achieved my goal."
There is a pause as Thor approaches the ladder and starts to climb the ladder. He stops a few steps up the ladder and begins speaking once more.
"After Dystopia the WWH International Championship will have its proper legacy and the forgotten past will no longer remain lost. Yet, don't get me wrong I plan on walking out of Dystopia holding the gold. After all, I have every intention of adding at least a few more title runs before my career and life end. However, I would be a fool to think that it will be an easy task to defeat the Matsuda. Only a complete idiot would think Matsuda is a pushover in the ring. However, recent events may have the War Queen distracted from the task at hand."
Another couple of steps up the ladder are made as Thor grins in amusement.
"I have been where Matsuda is several times in the past. Oh how the pain of betrayal stings when it happens. Oh and to add that betrayal in the aftermath of losing a title. That is right, I watched how Serenity Scorpio distracted Matsuda just as she was setting up for her finishing move. Though to be completely and utterly honest Matsuda should never have let Serenity's sudden reappearance to distract her. After all, it was that distraction that allowed Renee to regroup and get the eventual win to rip the WWH Women's Title out of Stephanie's grasp. However, to be fair The War Queen didn't tap out or get pinned; she lost the title by passing out and not being able to continue the fight. I can respect that mindset. Yet, it is what occurred after the match that is bound to have the Matsuda in a state of mental anguish. You see, after the big loss Serenity slid into the ring and pretended to be back at the side of the now former Champion. Even going as far as delivering a kick to the new champion. Of course, all of this was just a prelude to the Serenity Drop that was delivered to the unsteady Matsuda. The final act of betrayal to a close friend and mentor. Like I said before, I know how such a betrayal feels as I have experienced it several times over my career. So I know that mentally, Matsuda won't be completely focused on our match. A fact that I fully intend on taking full advantage of to rip the WWH International Title from her hands. In fact, one could say I fully intend on doing the War Queen a favor in our match when I defeat her."
He falls silent as he moves up the ladder stopping three quarters of the way up with a smirk on his lips.
"Why would my beating the War Queen be a favor? Oh that is simple, by removing the distraction that being the International Champion represents she will be free to get her revenge on Serenity. Or for that matter she will be able to focus on getting back the WWH Women's Title that she lost. Either way, a loss to me will allow Matsuda to refocus her attentions instead of having them be split as they have been until now. Now, before you all think I am belittling Matsuda's abilities in the ring, trust and believe me when I say I have the utmost respect for what she is capable of doing. Afterall, She held the Women's Title before I made my return and was a double champion for most of the Shogun Tournament. Don't think I am oblivious to how skilled Matsuda is inside a wrestling ring. However, even the most skilled of wrestlers can be beaten and I intend to do my dead level best to do just that."
Thor finishes climbing up the ladder and stands tall there with a smirk on his lips.
"Regardless of how this turns out the WWH is on the brink of a new era. Change is coming and Imperium will be at the forefront of it all. On Sanatorium the entire WWH was given an opportunity to be on the right side of what is coming. By the end of Dystopia the lines will have been drawn when Lord Baphomet reveals himself. I give the roster this one warning, be careful what you decide to do with the choice you have been given. The Left Hand will sweep over the WWH and those who oppose us will be left broken in our wake. You have been warned."
With those words Thor reaches his left hand over to the belt on his shoulder grabbing it. Once the belt was firmly in his grasp Thor thrust his left arm into the air as he stands on the top of the ladder. A look of deep contemplation and intense concentration on his lips.
"Now I know many will be wondering if there will be any outside interference for this match up, Which given the history of this company when it comes to stables is a fair question. Hell given what happened last Dystopia to Matsuda against Renee the question is even fairer. Let me clear the air on that matter, I have no intentions of allowing anyone connected to Imperium getting involved in this upcoming match. If nothing else has been shown by actions in the ring since I returned to the WWH, I am a man who fights his own battles. I am a warrior who will be victorious on his own merits or lose after a noble effort. With that being said, I can't promise anything from the rest of the locker room. Nor can I promise anything in the aftermath of our contest. Like I have said before I respect what Stephanie Matsuda is capable of in the ring. I respect how dominant she has been in the WWH but at the same time I remind you all that I have nothing to lose in this match. After all, I fully expect to be in a grave by this next year. Sure I stumbled in the Shogun Tournament and didn't make the Semi-Finals but I have rallied. I fully intend to do whatever it takes to win the International Championship even if it means pushing myself to the edge of death.|
Thor lowers his arms returning the tilt to his shoulder as a savage smile crosses his lips.
"I have seen how focused and dominant Matsuda has been in the ring but I am curious just how far is she willing to go to get a victory? Just how far is she willing to go to remain International Champion? This match is a no lose situation for me as like I said my goal will be accomplished either way. With that being said Matsuda will have to leave me a broken heap in the center of the ring before I will stop trying to climb the ladder to end her title reign. My time is coming to a close and everyone knows it, even if they doubt the truth of my medical condition. On Dystopia, my focus will be absolutely on being the one who walks out of Elysium Arena with the International Championship. Though I know that feat won't be an easy one and for that I am thankful. Unlike some people on this roster I enjoy the challenge of a tough contest. I hope you are ready for a fight Matsuda because I plan on bringing one. See you in the ring Champ."
With those words Thor climbs down the ladder stands in the ring for a moment before starting to circle around it.
"Oh, before I forget, I look forward to seeing who becomes the number one contender for the International Championship. Be it Havoc or Kaine I look forward to the challenge each presents moving forward. With that being said, it is such an interesting time to be part of the WWH and after Dystopia I expect things to be even more so."
With that the lights fade to black as the screen turns into a video package.
Once the video ends the image of the Left Hand logo remains on the screen before fading to black.
