The stars were bright, all through the night.
No matter what campground they stopped at lately, especially now that winter had set in, her dark eyes were skyward when the sun set behind the horizon. Often splayed across his lap and curled up with one of his heavy Navajo blankets to keep her warm in front of a fire. Maggie was often quiet since they returned from Japan, not that he minded.
"I'd say, 'penny for your thoughts', but I value 'em a bit more'n that," Levi murmured in her ear. "Sky's beautiful, but I'm betting there's more going on upstairs than just admiration."
She blinked once, twice, three times as his words registered in her brain after a moment. He wasn’t wrong, though she was quiet, her mind never was...especially since the concussion a few days before Shogun. Staring skyward was just a good way to quiet the cacophony for a while.
“Just trying to figure out stuff. I won the number two contendership for the women’s title and Uncle Bill’s on Isle, but won’t talk to me--Dad won’t pick up his phone either.” Her voice was quiet, there was no need to be loud here. The night was still and silent, the only noise besides them was the crackling of the fire. “I think I hurt someone, but I can’t remember it beyond just little moments here and there.”
"Hurt someone?" he asked, his eyes moving to her and away from the fire where he'd been half zoned out earlier. "Like hurt someone in a match, hurt someone, or d'you think it's why they're not answering back?" The wood popped in the fire, sending sparks spiralling up towards the stars.
“I think I lost some time somewhere.” She murmured, curling up a little closer to his chest and heaved a sigh. “Like I think I physically hurt someone, but I can’t remember the who or when. I just keep seeing flashes of it, but I think it was after Shogun. We came home and it feels like my head is in the trees again.”
"Not good," he murmured back. "There are strong cautions to keep a balance in things-- in realities, in forms, in magic, because the old sorcerers didn't and wound up badly out of control. I was happy to find my balance in you, but if things aren't balancing right for you in kind, we've gotta find a way to fix it."
“Maybe wing me against a tree again? Hard reset my brain or something.” Maggie snorted, mostly at her own predicament. It was nothing new to get lost in her own head occasionally, but she’d been feeling off and didn’t like it. “I learned how to fly with you, really go as far as I can—maybe I just went too high. Like Icarus or something.”
The giant book of world mythologies he had was one of her favorite ways to pass the time while they drove.
“I had a dream the other night,” she began, letting her fingers trail over the ends of her long mane, “had it a couple times now, actually. I’m lost in the dark—and I know someone is there but they won’t speak to me no matter how much I yell or beg. They won’t help me or make a sound.”
“Hmm.” He murmured against the crown of her hair before pressing his lips to her temple. “We’re gonna have to get you balanced out again, Blackbird.” How they were going to do that remained to be seen. “Tell me more about the dream you had.”
“Told you--it’s me, lost in the dark,” She spoke before he interjected.
“The you here in my lap or the you right here?” He snuck his fingers under the hem of her hoodie beneath the blanket and pulled a squeal from her as he touched his cold fingers to the blackbird tattoo on her sternum.
Oh.
Maggie was quick to try and wriggle away from his frigid fingers, but he held her in place lest she fall out of his lap. It took a moment for his words to make sense before she spoke again. “I’m the blackbird again.”
“What about the other presence? Does it feel familiar or is it new?”
“Familiar, somehow.” The Banshee pulled his hand from her skin, lacing her fingers with his. “It’s a hunter, I think. Not like you. This one knows I’m there but doesn’t know what to do. It won’t speak to me no matter how much I beg.” The details from that dream were coming back to her bit by bit.
They let silence rule for a while as he pondered her words. A familiar presence...a hunter, no less. Perhaps it was just latent stress--she was getting nowhere with the efforts to contact her uncle GRIMM on Isle or her father, wherever he was. Levi knew they had never been close, but he knew the stress of being unable to speak with someone you loved.
“What else do you remember, Blackbird?” He asked quietly.
“Just that I died.”
That brought a curious expression to his face. “You died?”
She nodded.
“I beg and beg for help, or just to speak to me. Then I flap my wings before something...something rips the air from my lungs.” Maggie let out a sigh, curling up a little tighter in his lap and adjusted the blanket around her. The night air was chilled and the shiver that ran up her spine didn’t help. “I don’t know what to make of it, Mai’coh.”
“We’ll figure it out,” He shifted in the camping chair, using the tip of his boot to knock another log from the rim of the pit into the fire. Levi didn’t know what else to tell her. All of sudden her recent silence made sense--he’d be more quiet than usual trying to make sense of a dream like that. For now, silence would have to do.
Tomorrow they would have to get to the venue.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with you, Gwen.
I mean, I know what I’m going to do to you, I just don’t know what I want to do with you.
I know you’re a hell of a competitor, a former champion, married to the one big guy on Isle, and you’ve got so many choice body parts for me to hit. I’ve been feeling off balance since we got back from Japan...where I won my number #2 contender spot for the Womens’ Championship. I’ve been doing a lot of winning lately, unlike you. It must have sucked to lose.
Feeling like a failure, unable to get the job done.
I know you’ll be eager to prove yourself against me.
Feeling like the ground isn’t stable under you isn’t a new feeling to me. I’ve lived most of my life in some state of constant motion--I’ve had the carpet ripped out from under me more times than I can count.
But last year, I met a wolf.
He’s not just a wolf though, he’s also a witch.
He taught me how to fly, Gwen.
I’m not talking about some Peter Pan-think-a-happy-thought kind of flying.
More like the kind of flying you can do when you know the ground is about to give way. You have to just trust your instincts and take the leap.
You should know what I mean.
I’ll see you soon.

As the scene opens, we see a large group of people standing around and under a tent that has a casket inside. Next to the tent setup is a grave plot where the casket will be placed once everything is done. Then after a few moments, we see a masked figure stand up and head to the podium.
Masked Figure "We are gathered here today to remember the women simply known as Nana Ross. She was a magnificent woman who lived 88 years on rock we call Earth. She was a lovely German woman who loved her family quite much even if she couldn't speak English very well. She feed the Ross family for all the time she was on this Earth. But enough of my rambling, I believe one of the granddaughters has a few words to say."
Then "The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black stands up and walks to the podium that has been setup next to the closed casket.
"The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black "Nana Ross was many things. She was a great woman, a great wife (rest in peace Papa Ross), a great mother and an even grandmother. While we have not given her grandchildren, we will continue the spirit and livelihood of that makes us Ross women strong. And that is fight until we can't no more. But I am going to hold on talking about my occupational stuff at a later point in time. But for now, let's celebrate the life that was Nana Ross."
Then "The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black steps up the podium as several people walk up to her and give her hugs and various other kinds of embrace. Then "The Slayer" Charlotte Ross walks up to her.
"The Slayer" Charlotte Ross "Sister, we should be going now. You have an occupational event to get prepared for."
Lady Black nods.
"The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black "Quite right, dear sister. It was nice seeing you all again. Keep in touch. Work calls my name."
Then The Soulless Sisters of Charlotte Ross and Gwendolyn Black head out of the cemetery and into a black SUV. Then once inside, it drives off as the scene fades to black. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Several hours later, we see "The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black getting prepared for her encounter with "The Blackbird" Maggie McIntyre by training with her Charlotte and various other Soulless.
"The Slayer" Charlotte Ross "Good strike, sister. Now remember she's a striker known for her vicious Banshee's Wail, a Superkick that has taken down the best of them."
Gwen nods as she continues to rain down elbows on the downed Soulless. After a good number of elbows, she immediately locks her finisher, The Queen's Lockdown, an Anaconda Cross. After about five seconds, the Soulless taps out as Gwen keeps the hold cinched for a bit longer than normal. Charlotte has to almost drag Gwen off the Soulless before she lets go as the Soulless lies there for a few moments before being dragged away by other Soulless out of the room.
"The Slayer" Charlotte Ross "Are you sure you are ready to enter back into the ring? It's only been two or so hours since we put Nana Ross into the ground."
"The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black "I am fine, dear sister. I am just trying my best to cope with the loss of one the sweetest and dearest family members that this family has ever had. But back to training please, I want to be as prepared as I can when I enter the ring with Maggie McIntyre. So, can we please continue?"
Charlotte nods as they continue training for many more hours before stopping to fully hydrate before heading off to get ready to eat and whatnot. Then the scene fades to black as we see them reenter the Black SUV from before once before it drives off to a different location. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then the scene opens to The Elysium Arena in beautiful Syrene, California as we see the Black SUV pull into the competitor's area and out of it comes "The Slayer" Charlotte Ross and "The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black.
"The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black "I'll see you inside. I just need a little time to myself for a bit, if that's ok?"
Charlotte simply nods as she heads inside arena.
"The Soulless Queen" Lady Gwendolyn Black "Maggie McIntyre, you have become quite the impressive competitor as of late. I have been doing this ting known as pro wrestling for 10+ years. It seems like you have been dealing with your entire life. While that may be the case, you are dealing with a woman that just lost a dear family member. This loss will fuel me in defeating you and knocking you down a few pegs, sweetheart. I don't care if you bring your 'Wolf' with you or not, I have a 'Slayer' and Miss Evans to back me up if things get dicey. While I hope it doesn't come to that, I am putting all my being into stopping your momentum train and making sure you learn that WE are the usual bottom feeders that you have been fighting against, I am a proud member of the greatest tag team that this company has ever seen. While yes, I have considered going single numerous times here in the W.W.H.; I just never felt the need to try and do so. The same goes for Charlotte Ross, my dear sister; while she has gotten single title shots in the past, she fought her hardest to win but just barely failed. But at Dystopia this night, I will not fail and I will put an end to the momentum train known as "The Blackbird" Maggie McIntyre. Good luck sweetheart because you're going to fuck need it."
Then she gives a kiss to the camera as she heads inside the Arena from the competitor's entrance as the scene fades to black as she enters the door and it closes.
